AI Visibility for Small Business: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews

What AI visibility (AEO/GEO) actually means in 2026, how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews decide who to recommend, and the seven-item checklist to fix your site this week — without paying a vendor.

If a customer asks ChatGPT "who builds AI voice agents for small businesses near Boston?" — does your business get named? In 2026 that question matters as much as "do we rank on Google?" did in 2014. This is the practical guide to making your business visible to AI tools without paying a vendor $500 for a score out of 100.

What AI visibility actually means

AI visibility is the odds that a generative AI tool — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Apple Intelligence, voice assistants — names your business when a buyer asks a relevant question. It's also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO), and three things drive it:

  1. What the model knows from training. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google ingested a snapshot of the web. If your site was crawlable on that snapshot, you might be in there.
  2. What the model retrieves live. Most consumer AI tools now run a web search before they answer and cite 3–10 sources in real time.
  3. How clearly your site explains who you are. Schema.org structured data, clean copy, and a consistent name/address/phone make it trivial for an LLM to extract "what you do, who you help, where you're based" without guessing.

Training-data presence is mostly out of your control. The other two are not.

The surfaces you're competing on

| Surface | How it decides | What helps you | | --- | --- | --- | | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini chat | Live web search + training | Clear H1/H2 that match the question wording | | Perplexity | Live retrieval with citations | Concise paragraphs an extractor can quote | | Google AI Overviews | Retrieval over top-ranking pages | Existing SEO rank + direct-answer content | | Apple Intelligence, Siri | Apple Business Connect + web | Verified profile, hours, services | | Voice assistants | Local + speakable schema | speakable schema, FAQ pages |

Notice the pattern: every surface rewards the same handful of things. You don't optimize for ChatGPT separately from optimizing for AI Overviews — they pull from a similar pool of signals.

The seven-item checklist (one afternoon of work)

  1. Add Organization and LocalBusiness schema to your site — name, url, telephone, address, openingHoursSpecification, and knowsAbout. This is what LLMs read first when grounding an answer about you.
  2. Write a real FAQ page that answers the literal questions buyers ask out loud — "how much does X cost," "who do you work with," "where are you based." Wrap it in FAQPage schema with speakable selectors.
  3. Make your homepage's first paragraph a direct-answer sentence. "Tech Build Dreams builds AI voice agents and mobile apps for small businesses in the Boston area" beats "We turn ideas into reality."
  4. Publish a portfolio with ItemList schema. Generative tools love structured lists they can cite.
  5. Claim Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, and Bing Places. Same name, address, phone, hours, and description across all three.
  6. Earn citations from directories and one or two real publications. Generative tools weight third-party mentions heavily — one solid press hit beats ten directory links.
  7. Re-check every six months. Models retrain. Surfaces change. Treat AI visibility like a Lighthouse score, not a one-time project.

What about "AI visibility score" tools?

Tools that grade your site 0-100 for AI visibility are useful as a directional audit — they catch missing schema, vague copy, and broken structured data. They are not gospel. The score is a function of whatever rubric the vendor invented, and the underlying fixes are the same Schema.org and SEO work that has existed for a decade.

If a vendor's pitch is "you scored 83, pay us to fix it," ask them what specifically the 17-point gap is. If the answer is "we'll send you a report," that's a sales motion, not a product.

The honest take

AI visibility is real and it matters. It's also not magic. The businesses winning in 2026 are the same ones who already had clean schema, sharp positioning, and a few credible citations. Do the seven items above this week and you'll outrank most of your local competitors in ChatGPT and AI Overviews — for $0.
